Description and Objectives
We will read several novels and short stories by Fitzgerald and Hemingway not in order to rank them but to appreciate more deeply how they advanced twentieth-century fiction by their unique far-ranging achievements in narrative technique. We will also explore their relationship with their editor, Maxwell Perkins, at Scribner’s, in order to see how the shaping of their work took place under his direction in cultivating their inspiration and craftsmanship.
